A leaking pool can be a headache for several reasons, yet the two most common ones are:
Structural damage: An un-repaired leak can create costly structural damage, caused water eroding the supporting soil around the pool, it also, causes damage by the excess moisture surrounding the structure.
Chemical waste: Having to treat and properly rebalance chemicals in new water can cost a pool owners $1000′s per year. New water as is added to the pool is thirsty for minerals it also comes with elevated phosphates, algae and having to balance it can cost a lot of money.

Phosphates and Why removing them is Important

What are phosphates and where are they coming from?

Without getting too technical, phosphates are the form of Phosphorus (P) that we most commonly find in pools. There are many different types of phosphates and phosphoric acids. There are too many variations to name, so let’s just simply refer to them all as “phosphates”.

That being said, there is something you need to know. Test kits in the swimming pool business usually only test for orthophosphates, and may not pick up the other types. But in the presence oxidizers or sunlight (….so, every swimming pool we deal with), other types of phosphates can break down and convert into orthophosphates over time. In fact, it’s not uncommon to test phosphates, and the next day has a higher level. It’s complicated, but just know that it is possible to have higher phosphate levels than your test kit shows.

Phosphates usually get into water three ways:

Chemically: there are phosphate-based chemicals like sequestering agents that are popular in the pool business to prevent scale and metal stains.

Naturally (contamination): weather like wind and rain can introduce soils and other debris from nature that contain phosphates in them. Think about plants and grass near the pool, and if the yard uses any fertilizers that could be washed into the pool during a heavy rainstorm. How about this, are you in a rural area near farmland? When the wind blows, the fertilizers they use are a huge contributor to phosphates in pools.

Tap water: Water treatment centers have been treating drinking water with phosphate-based sequestering agents. They do so to protect the infrastructure and pipes from scale formation and corrosion. And it’s a good thing they do, by the way. It’s just a problem for swimming pools that we need to be aware of. We strongly suggest testing for phosphates in your tap water to see if this is a factor in your pool.

Why should we remove phosphates?

So now that we know what phosphates are and where they come from, let’s talk about what they do and why we should remove them from our water. Phosphates are a key nutrient for microorganisms…in particular, algae.

According to renowned water chemistry expert Richard Falk, phosphates over 500 ppb can be problematic. The reason? Because phosphates allow for optimal growth and reproduction of microorganisms. Sanitization basically boils down to the growth rate of microorganisms vs. the kill rate of the sanitizer. If the growth rate exceeds the kill rate, you can get an outbreak…say, for example, an algae bloom.

Pool Filter Maintenance and Replacement

It is important to maintain and clean the pool filter of your pool regularly to ensure that it is functioning properly and to help prevent any potential leaks. Cleaning the pool filter should be done at least once a month, or more frequently if you use the pool often, we recommend cleaning it every two weeks during the summer and every 3-4 weeks during the colder months. When cleaning the pool filter, you should look out for any signs of wear, damage, or deterioration and make sure all parts are in good working order. Additionally, you should check for any blockages or clogs that could cause a slowdown in filtration and lead to water build-up over time.

To clean a pool filter properly, first shut off the pump’s power source before removing the filter housing for inspection. Once removed, inspect for any physical damage or broken parts that may need repair or replacement. Next scrub gently with a soft brush to remove debris from the outside of the filter housing as well as from inside components such as O-rings, gaskets, and lids. To further cleanse these components, use hot water mixed with a mild soap solution and then rinse with cool water afterward. Finally, replace all components in the housing unit; ensuring everything is securely fastened before turning on the power source once again.

Especially if you have an inground pool, it is advisable to have your pool filters professionally checked and cleaned at least twice every year; most likely once during the springtime (right before using your pool) and once during autumn. This will help keep your filters running efficiently while also keeping them free from debris buildup which can lead to costly leaks down the line. Taking an extra step in preventive maintenance not only saves you time but money too!

This process can cause the performance of the filter to decline regardless of how well it’s cleaned and maintained.
